At AIG, it is essential to ensure that every entered vessel meets the required standards for safety, seaworthiness, and quality of tonnage. To maintain these standards, the assured may be requested to arrange a P&I Condition Survey by a surveyor from our approved list, typically within 30 to 60 days of entry, depending on the terms of cover set by our underwriters.
Survey Appointments:
AIG reserves the right to appoint a surveyor at any time, or following an incident that may result in liabilities covered under the policy. Surveys are carried out at a time and place mutually agreed upon. During the inspection, the surveyor will:
• Assess the vessel’s physical condition
• Review the effectiveness of onboard management
• Identify any deficiencies requiring attention
If issues are detected, the Master and/or owner’s representative will be provided with a detailed list of deficiencies, which will also be reported to AIG. Where repairs are necessary, a follow-up survey may be required to confirm that deficiencies have been rectified.
Defect Exclusion:
In cases where deficiencies remain unresolved, our Technical Department may advise the Underwriting Department to apply a defect exclusion clause to the vessel’s cover. These exclusions remain in force until the vessel has:
• Successfully completed a full P&I Condition Survey, or
• Undergone a Follow-up Survey confirming satisfactory rectification of all outstanding items
At AIG, our survey process is designed not only to safeguard the interests of our assureds but also to promote safer, more efficient vessel operations in line with international best practices.
